The "Easy to use" column is specifically answering the question: "Is it easy to use this program to draw circuit layouts?" This is to help clarify that while programs like Inkscape and Dia may pass all the criteria, they are not good choices for drawing circuits. They are easy to use for other tasks, but this chart is specifically geared toward finding a good circuit drawing program.

http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/ is a compromise between Inkscape and Xcircuit: it exports in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVG, it has a small library of electronic components and it has a grid; the bad points are that it can not rotate objects (thus having strong limitations). It does have a library of elements for ladder diagrams, which none of the others have, and the libraries are extensible. For general-purpose schematics it is less than satisfactory. Inconsistencies in user-contributed libraries: Many parts from different libraries do not even line up, so it is impossible to make connections between them.

[img[Star-triangle transformation drawn with Dia | http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9c/Star-Triangle_transformation.png/640px-Star-Triangle_transformation.png]]
The EAGLE Light Edition can be used for http://www.cadsoftusa.com/freeware.htm. Available for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Limitations
The following limitations apply to the EAGLE Light Edition in general:
* The usable board area is limited to 100 x 80 mm (4 x 3.2 inches).
* Only two signal layers can be used (Top and Bottom).
* The schematic editor can only create one sheet.
Apart from these three limitations the EAGLE Light Edition can do anything the Professional Edition can do. You can even load, view and print drawings that exceed these limits!

The Freeware version of EAGLE Light adds these limitations:
* Support is only available via email or through our forum (no fax or phone support).
* Use is limited to non-profit applications or evaluation purposes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP is a programme for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/raster image processing, so it is not meant to be used for any kind of schematics. It does not support http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVG and everything has be drawn from scratch. It is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/multi-platform and several people used it on http://commons.wikimedia.org to draw circuits. It could be useful for some post-processing, but the output will not be in SVG.

[>img[Example of Inkscape's SVG output|http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/7293/150pxtransistoramplifielm7.png]] http://www.inkscape.org has a pretty good interface and nice output, but it's specifically meant for artistic drawing and not diagramming. There is a plan to introduce some more diagramming features in the future, but the developers don't want to go too far in that direction for fear of bloating past their primary art focus. They've just added the ability to create program extensions, though, which could be useful for writing some kind of circuit drawing extension. As of January 2006, Inkscape supports drawing connections (wires) between anchors on objects, which makes it much nicer for circuits, but still not a complete solution.

[>img[Library of electrical symbols for diagramming| http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/8523/150pxelectricalsymbolslin5.png]]
There is a (small but extendable) http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Electrical_symbols_library.svg available. Creating diagrams using this template is slightly slower than in specialised programs, but it is very flexible and produces nice vector output.

http://kicad.sf.net is an open source suite of tools including schematic design; recently moved to ~SourceForge.
It has some nice features:
* Snap to grid
* Component libraries with built-in editor
* Rotate components
* Outputs in SVG (which works with http://openoffice.org SVG import tool)
* Project (schematic, PCB, etc) management
* Open source and actively maintained
* Open file format

But isn't perfect:
* Moving a component doesn't move attached traces
* Doesn't route around components
* SVG output includes page border, title, etc (can be cropped with something like InkScape)
* Can't use Greek in labels, which means no Ω on resistor values.
[>img[Unbalanced Splitter drawn with KiCAD]SVG Output Sample.svg]
[>img[VFO Circuit in Klunky| http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5010/klunkyzg8.th.png]] Klunky can be used to draw basic circuits in a web browser, and then a raster editing program like the GIMP to modify the screenshots. The Klunky program is public domain, and has been enhanced with additional components, etc.

Advantages
* No install -- runs in web-browser
* Collection of source files are portable, can be used "offline"
* Relatively quick, at least compared to drawing components by hand
* Public domain
* Can be enhanced even further with better-drawn components
* Can be saved as a web page
Disadvantages
* Outputs a raster format
* Can't save / transfer drawings (unless you edit browser cookies)
* Everything is restricted to blocks and some compacting to save space is sometimes needed in the image editor afterwards
* Style changes between creators. Even the style has changed for the same creator somewhat, since he switched to the GIMP which has different fonts and smoothing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Poccil has been working on an update to Klunky that generates ~SVGs directly. This would be the ideal solution if not for the limitation of putting everything in square blocks.

It gives you the possibility to set up a circuit with a graphical user interface and simulate the large-signal, small-signal and noise behaviour of the circuit. Pure digital simulations are also supported using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHDL and/or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verilog.

Qucs supports a growing list of analog and digital components as well as SPICE sub-circuits.

It's very easy to work with for drawing schematics. It's close to being an ideal tool for drawing schematics for use in documentation, but lacks SVG support. [>img[Practice problem for node equations |http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/4384/qucssamplecircuitscreencr1.th.png]]

* Not clear how to create your own objects
* Printing schematics outputs a blank page.
* Moving objects does move and reroute the wires, but the routing algorithm needs help.

Good for simulation, weaker as a general-purpose schematic drawing program.

# It should be both free and open source.
## The file format should be open or well-documented for future migration options.
# It should be multi-platform: in order to be proposed as a standard, anybody must be able to use it. The program has to run on at least Windows and Linux, preferably including Mac OS.
# It should have a (large) standard collection of electric/electronic components, with an extensible library: this way it will not be necessary to draw components from scratch, and, just in case, it will be necessary to do it just once.
# Connections should be better than just lines. They should attach to components, default to right angles, move when the components are moved, autoroute around objects, and so on.
# It should not require the user to learn a great deal of distracting or convoluted methods to draw schematics.
# It should have Bezier curves to allow the creation of good audio curves, since most weighting curves are specified by points, not by an equation or circuit model.
# It has to help the schematic drawing with the option to "snap" components to a grid (otherwise it will be hard to make a precise drawing).
# Optional: It should be part of a complete, easy to use, drawing package, not just for circuit diagrams (though a 'circuit mode' might be good).

[>img[SIMetrix| http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/553/simetrixrh6.th.png]]
http://www.catena.uk.com/ is a mixed-mode circuit simulation package designed for professional electronics engineers. ~SIMetrix comprises a substantially enhanced SPICE simulator, schematic editor and waveform viewer in a unified environment. ~SIMetrix Intro and ~SIMetrix/SIMPLIS Intro are full featured products but subject to generous circuit size SIMetrix Limitations.

Advantages:
* Nice looking output.
* Schematic editor / SPICE simulator.
* Free version with unlimited schematic drawing and editing.
** Hierarchical schematics
* Selection of colours for components, wires, etc. for easy identification.
* Auto-routing and snap-to-grid.
* Simple placement of components - select and click-to-place with mouse.
* Can save a schematic as an SVG or other graphic file.
* Can save schematics in an ASCII or binary format -- documentation for the ASCII format is provided with the installation.
* Free version for Windows or Linux may be used indefinitely; program may be freely shared (per ~SIMetrix 5.40b splash screen)
* Excellent documentation (PDF)
Disadvantages:
* Free version has limited simulation capability (not applicable for drawing schematics).
* Not open source
* Email registration required to receive download link (no password or user account)
* Some basic schematic symbols missing (switches, relays)
* New symbol creation process is unclear
* Symbol picker is cumbersome (menu driven, except for limited number of symbols on toolbar)
All features of the full production version are enabled except:
# The command line is not present. This effectively inhibits any features that require the command line. There are, however, very few of these
# User scripts
# Custom menu and key definitions
# The ~PSpice translator is limited to small schematics
# ~SPICE3 raw file import
# Safe Operating Area testing is not available
# The menu/key editor is not available
Some of the above features can be enabled for 30 days using the unlock feature. See menu //Help | Unlock Features...//

Circuit Size Limits
There is a limit to the size of circuit that can be simulated. The exact limits are:
* 120 internal analog nodes ("internal analog nodes" include nodes inside elements such as opamps)
* 36 digital nodes
* 72 digital ports
* 24 digital components
* 36 digital outputs
There is also a limit to the number of some analog components. The limit for each type of component varies. For example, you can have about 18 ~BJTs or 76 diodes, but you can't have 18 ~BJTs and 76 diodes. But you could have 9 ~BJTs and 38 diodes. There are no limits for some components, e.g. resistors, independent sources and controlled sources.

There are no Limits On...
* ...the complexity of arbitrary source expressions or arbitrary logic block definitions.
* There are also no limits on the size of schematic that can be drawn or printed. You are welcome to use SIMetrix as a free general purpose schematic drawing tool.

[>img[TinyCAD|http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/3017/tinycadqi4.th.png]]

http://tinycad.sourceforge.net/ is a program to help you draw circuit diagrams. It comes complete with symbol libraries to get you started straight away. As well as being able to simply print your designs, you can use TinyCAD to publish your drawings by copying and pasting into a Word document, or saving as a PNG bitmap for the web.

You can use ~TinyCAD as a front end to a PCB layout program (see the links), by getting ~TinyCAD to create a netlist of your circuit.

~TinyCAD is fully open-source so you can use it for free and you can download the source code for use in your own projects.

Advantages
* Simple & powerful
* Excellent symbol picker with library selection and search filter
* symbol libraries with built-in editor
** Powerfully easy symbol editor (same tools etc as schematic editor, but "symbols" are treated as their constituent shapes
** Can import images or other symbols
** Flexible parts attributes; attributes can even be added in the drawing that are not in the original symbol
* XML file format
** Stores symbols independent of library (no need to distribute custom library with schematics)
**
* Snap to grid
* Rotate symbols
* Multi-page schematics
* Design details (title block), configurable design guides
* Open source (LGPL)
** Amazingly small download (2.5Mb)
** Documentation source files in Microsoft Word HTML provided, but not easy to work with
* Third-party and user-contributed libraries available via support site/list (Yahoo! Groups)

Disadvantages
* Inconsistent symbol libraries - parts different sizes, different standards (many libraries are user-contributed)
* Only 90-degree increments of rotation for objects (symbols or selection)
* Cannot assign attributes to wires or nets
* Color fills in symbols (even white) will print as black when "print in b/w" selected
* Microsoft Windows only
* Documentation in Windows Help (CHM) has no TOC, hard to print (updated file available from support site/list on Yahoo! Groups).

| Name|ToggleTagPlugin|
| Description|Makes a checkbox which toggles a tag in a tiddler|
| Version|3.0 ($Rev: 1845 $)|
| Date|$Date: 2007-03-16 15:19:22 +1000 (Fri, 16 Mar 2007) $|
| Source|http://tiddlyspot.com/mptw/#ToggleTagMacro|
| Author|Simon Baird <simon.baird@gmail.com>|
| License|http://mptw.tiddlyspot.com/#TheBSDLicense|
!Usage
{}//{TagName TiddlerName LabelText}//{}
* TagName - the tag to be toggled, default value "checked"
* TiddlerName - the tiddler to toggle the tag in, default value the current tiddler
* LabelText - the text (gets wikified) to put next to the check box, default value is '{TagName}' or '{TagName TiddlerName}'
(If a parameter is '.' then the default will be used)

Examples:

|Code|Description|Example|h
|{}|Toggles the default tag (checked) in this tiddler|<<toggleTag>>|
|{}|Toggles the TagName tag in this tiddler|<<toggleTag TagName>>|
|{}|Toggles the TagName tag in the TiddlerName tiddler|<<toggleTag TagName TiddlerName>>|
|{}|Same but with custom label|<<toggleTag TagName TiddlerName 'click me'>>|
|{}|dot means use default value|<<toggleTag . . 'click me'>>|
Notes:
* If TiddlerName doesn't exist it will be silently created
* Set label to '-' to specify no label
* See also http://mgtd-alpha.tiddlyspot.com/#ToggleTag2

!Known issues
* Doesn't smoothly handle the case where you toggle a tag in a tiddler that is current open for editing

http://opencircuitdesign.com/xcircuit/ is meant to be used for drawing circuits for professional publications. It is very powerful, with a huge standard library and very easy to use. It saves by default in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/postscript, and it can be converted in SVG using http://www.pstoedit.net/pstoedit. It can optionally export with any quality in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PNG. It is not natively http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/multi-platform (it is developed mainly for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/linux), but it is possible to make stand-alone executables for both Windows and Mac OS X (there is http://www.geocities.com/sw286000/ and http://opencircuitdesign.com/xcircuit/download.html) adding some libraries in it. Some of the symbols are kind of ugly.

The most extensive use of xcircuit for a publication to date (that I know of) is Tony Kuphaldt's http://www.ibiblio.org/kuphaldt/electricCircuits/, a sweeping electronics textbook available for free download from ibiblio.org.

For more info about creating SVG circuits with it see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics/How to draw SVG circuits using Xcircuit.

Advantages
* ~PostScript File format
* Powerful drawing program
Disadvantages
* Oriented towards drawings: does not treat "wires" any differently than lines (esp. moving parts breaks wires)
* Does not appear to support multi-page schematics
* Windows version lags significantly in development

http://www.geda.seul.org/ is a suite of collaborative software used for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_design_automation. The project's name stands for //GPL’d suite of Electronic Design Automation tools//.

The gEDA project offers a mature suite of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/free_software applications for electronics design, including schematic capture using //gschem//, attribute management //gattrib//, bill of materials (BOM) generation, netlisting into over 20 netlist formats (//gnetlist//), analog and digital simulation (//ngspice//, //gnucap//, //Icarus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verilog//, and //~GTKWave//, and Printed circuit board (PCB) layout (//pcb//).

gEDA/gaf refers to a smaller subset of tools //“grouped together under the gEDA name”// and maintained directly by the gEDA project. These tools include:http://geda.seul.org/wiki/geda:faq

* gschem — A schematic capture program
* gnetlist — A netlist generation program
* gsymcheck — A syntax checker for schematic symbols
* gattrib — A spreadsheet programm that manipulates the properties of symbols of a schematic
* libgeda — Libraries for gschem, gnetlist, and gsymcheck
* gsch2pcb — Forward annotation from schematic to layout using pcb
* Assorted utility programs

gEDA can be run under MS Windows using http://geda.seul.org/wiki/geda:cygwin -- see also geda on Cygwin, but requires a lot of work.

Using Cygwin to install PCB and gEDA on Windows XP

Note that this is an older version (2006)

1) Go to Cygwin and download the installer application which is only 300 KB in size. Open it.

2) Choose "Download Without Installing" and then select a directory where up to 700 MB of data can be saved to.

3) After selecting you Internet connection type, it will ask you to "Choose A Download Site". Go to the "User URL" line and enter http://geda.seul.org/devel/cygwin/latest and click "Add".

4) Now choose a Mirror that is close to you AND THEN hold down the Ctrl key and click on the http://geda.seul.org line. You should now have 2 URLs highlighted in blue. Click next and it will download a couple hundred KB.

5) Find the "Electronics cygwinDefault" and click on Default so that it will say "Install" if you cant find the Electronics line repeat step 4.

Cygwin Install

6) Personally I use quite a few of the other applications in Cygwin that I normally have on a Linux Distribution so I go to "All cygwinDefault" and change it to "Install".
**** It may take 3 to 10 seconds of 'hang' time for the program to update all of the dependencies to "Install" please be patient.
The full install will result in the installation of 2 to 3 GB of data.

7) Click Next, and if says there are "Unmet Dependancies Found" let it install those packages as well.

8) Go outside for a while and enjoy some non-monitor generated light for a while, yes I know "I see the light, and it burns" for me too.

Add more details from here on - Andy

9) When it has downloaded the files you can restart the application and click on "Install from Local Directory" this time. It will take a while to install all of the files, so you might as well see some natural light again.

10) When everything has finished, look for the new cygwin icon on your desktop. Open it and when you have the prompt on the black terminal type startx

11) When the X-window opens type geda and gEDA should open.

If you would like to install gEDA on Cygwin by compiling the source visit this page and they will give you detailed instructions.

Electric is a sophisticated electrical CAD system that can handle many forms of circuit design, including:
* Custom IC layout (~ASICs)
* Schematic drawing
* Hardware description language specifications

Electric has these CAD operations:
* Design rule checking
* Electrical rule checking
* Simulation and simulation interface (many options)
* Generation (~ROMs, ~PLAs, Pad Frames, etc.)
* Compaction
* Routing [>img]
* VHDL compilation
* Silicon compilation
* Network consistency checking (LVS)
* Logical Effort analysis
* Project Management

Electric can display these types of design:
* MOS (many CMOS and ~nMOS variations)
* Bipolar and ~BiCMOS
* Schematics and printed circuits
* Digital filters, Temporal logic
* Artwork

Electric handles these file formats:
* CIF I/O
* GDS I/O
* EDIF I/O
* DXF I/O
* SUE Input
* VHDL I/O
* Verilog Output
* EAGLE, PADS, and ECAD Output
* ~PostScript, HPGL, and PNG output

Electric runs on these platforms:
* UNIX
* Macintosh
* Windows

Advantages
* No install -- a single Java .jar contains the program and all help files
* Exceptionally powerful
* Very easy to draw schematics
* Moving objects moves and reroutes the wires fairly intelligently
Disadvantages
* Overly powerful for simply drawing schematics -- too much to learn (or ignore) for some
* Only basic circuit components are present (eg., no relays)
* Not clear how to create your own schematic symbols (it may be there)
